Eating for a good cause

10:30 AM
So I couldn't find any bake sales to benefit the next nuclear aircraft carrier but I did find the next best thing: A pancake benefit put on by the always-working Amherst Fire Department. All proceeds benefit SAFE (Student Awareness of Fire Education) an education program that teaches kids about a most formidable foe, fire.

The men behind the curtain

I took my two boys there. The men and women of the AFD could not have been more hospitable, warm, or generous with their time. They took an amazing amount of time to show my boys the trucks, the equipment, the ambulances, etc. They made their week! It was very much appreciated.

Yeah, and they are pretty darn handy to have around in case of a fire (as I know all too well)

I joined a gym in Easthampton back in the spring, and since then I've had the privilege to work out alongside men and women from the Northampton, Easthampton, Granby and Greenfield departments. One day, a few of them tackled the workout in their full gear; some pictures here:

Needless to say -- it's been hugely inspiring to see first-hand the type of dedicated people we have protecting our communities.

Hey Greg,
Yeah, on the 10'anniversary of THAT awful day I'm thinking about setting up a couple stairclimbers in Amherst town center and letting folks see what it is like to ascend many, many floors with 50 or 60 pounds of gear on your back.

Amazing that some of those firefighters made it as high as the 79'th floor.
